AI, Women, and the Changing Leadership Landscape: Key Insights from the NPSM Global Panel Discussion

Artificial intelligence is already reshaping how organizations operate, how teams collaborate, and how careers evolve. To examine what this shift means for women’s leadership and long-term career mobility, NPSM (by Advance Solutions Corp.) recently hosted a global virtual panel discussion titled “AI, Women & the Future of Work: Risk, Reskilling & Reinvention.” 

The conversation brought together industry leaders across technology, financial services, and risk management to explore an urgent question:

Administrative and clerical positions such as data entry, scheduling, and documentation are among the first roles being automated by generative AI systems. Historically, these positions have been disproportionately filled by women.

According to a study published by McKinsey, up to 30% of current work activities could be automated by 2030 as generative AI adoption accelerates.

This shift places many workers in operational roles at a higher risk of disruption. However, panelists emphasized an important distinction: this vulnerability does not reflect women’s abilities or skills. It reflects long-standing workforce structures that placed women in roles now most exposed to automation. 

Another emerging trend is the AI Adoption Gap. 

A Harvard Business School Research cited during the discussion indicates that women are currently using generative AI tools at a 25% lower rate than men.

Interestingly, the gap is not driven by technical ability. Instead, it often stems from concerns about trust, ethics, and reliability of AI systems. Addressing this gap will be critical as AI adoption in the workplace continues to accelerate.
 

AI is Both a Risk and an Opportunity 

While the conversation acknowledged the risks of automation, the panel strongly emphasized that AI should not be viewed only as a threat. 

Automation is removing repetitive tasks such as:

Leadership Is Being Redefined in the AI Era 

Future leaders will increasingly oversee hybrid teams, where humans and AI systems collaborate to produce outcomes. This requires a new leadership skill set. Leaders must now be able to: 

➤ question automated outputs
➤ recognize algorithmic bias
➤ interpret complex data insights
➤ make responsible decisions based on AI-generated information 

Critical thinking and judgment, therefore, become even more valuable in the AI-driven workplace. These skills cannot be automated easily and remain deeply human capabilities.

 According to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report, the most important skills for the future workforce include analytical thinking, creativity, and complex problem solving.

The Boardroom Question That is Still Missing 

One insight from the discussion stood out clearly: Many boardroom conversations about AI focus primarily on operational efficiency. Questions often revolve around: 

How many tasks can be automated?
How much cost can be reduced?
How quickly can productivity improve? 

But an equally important question is often overlooked:
How will AI transformation impact different groups within the workforce, including women?

Without asking this question explicitly, organizations risk unintentionally reinforcing existing gaps in leadership pipelines and career mobility. Forward-looking organizations are beginning to recognize that AI strategy must include workforce reskilling and inclusive leadership development, not just automation.

AI Literacy Is Becoming a Core Career Skill 

Another key takeaway from the discussion was that AI literacy is quickly becoming a foundational workplace skill. 

Just as earlier generations needed to learn tools like spreadsheets and digital communication platforms, the next generation of professionals must understand how to work effectively with AI systems. This includes learning how to: 

➤ craft effective AI prompts
➤ evaluate AI-generated insights
➤ verify information and avoid bias
➤ combine AI outputs with human expertise 

Importantly, AI literacy is not limited to technical roles. From finance and insurance to healthcare and education, AI tools are increasingly embedded across industries.

The Confidence Gap Still Matters 

Beyond technical skills, the discussion also touched on an important cultural challenge in career progression. 

Research consistently shows that women often evaluate job requirements more cautiously before applying for new roles. Many candidates wait until they meet nearly every qualification listed in a job description. By contrast, others apply even when they meet only part of the criteria. 

In a rapidly evolving AI-driven workforce, where roles are constantly changing, this difference in confidence can influence career mobility. 

The panel emphasized that curiosity, experimentation, and initiative will play a critical role in the future of work. Professionals who actively explore AI tools, test new workflows, and learn continuously will be best positioned to grow into leadership roles.

Why the AI Era Could Strengthen Women’s Leadership 

Despite the disruption AI introduces, the discussion ended on a note of optimism. 

Many of the leadership qualities expected to become more valuable in the AI era align closely with strengths frequently associated with effective women leaders. These include

➤ empathy and emotional intelligence
➤ communication and collaboration
➤ ethical reasoning
➤ relationship building 

As automation takes over repetitive operational tasks, organizations will increasingly rely on leaders who can combine human-centered thinking with technological awareness. When paired with AI literacy, these capabilities can become powerful leadership advantages.

The Path Forward 

AI will continue transforming industries, redefining job roles, and accelerating the pace of innovation. But technology alone will not determine the outcome. The future of work will be shaped by how organizations invest in their people and how individuals adapt to new tools and opportunities.
